Dar Al 'Ilm aims to promote excellence in knowledge. It is only through knowledge and firm belief in Allah (swt) that one is able to elevate him or herself to superior ranks and praiseworthy stations:

"Allah raises the ranks of those among you who believe and those who were granted the knowledge" (Surah al-Mujadilah: 11)

While explaining this verse Abdullah ibn Masud would say:

"O people understand this verse for it will encourage you to seek knowledge; indeed Allah elevates the believer who has knowledge over the one who does not have knowledge in ranks" (Reported by Imam Ibn al-Jawzi in his Zad al-Masir fi 'Ilm al-Tafsir)

The Messenger (saw) himself in many ahadith encouraged the seeking of knowledge foremost among them is the hadith narrated by Imam al-Tirmidhi in his Jami' and Muslim in his Sahih:

"Whoever embarks on the path of seeking knowledge, Allah will make easy for him the path to paradise."

Knowledge of the fundamentals of the deen e.g. 'aqidah, tahara, salah, etc. is an individual obligation (fard 'ayn) upon all Muslims, male and female. Knowledge of the branch matters is a communal obligation (fard Kifaya), which means if some carry it out then the burden is lifted from the rest of the community.
